The first major settlement on the N91, LE BOURG-D'OISANS, 20km southeast of Grenoble, is of no great interest in itself, but it's a good place to catch your breath. You can pick up information from the tourist office, on quai Girard, by the river in the middle of town (July & Aug 9am7pm; SeptJune MonSat 9amnoon & 27pm; tel 04.76.80.03.25, www.oisans.com) and the park information centre on rue Gambetta (July & Aug 8amnoon & 37pm; SeptJune MonFri 8amnoon & 25.30pm; tel 04.76.80.00.51). There are some good-value hotels here, among them L'Oberland, on avenue du Gare (tel 04.76.80.24.24, www.oisans.com/hotel.oberland; €4055) and the Hôtel Le Florentin on rue Thiers (tel 04.76.80.01.61, www.le-florentin.com; €4055; restaurant from €15). Campers are well catered for, with a municipal campsite on rue Humbert near the town centre and a concentration of sites across the river on the Alpe d'Huez road. If you like the idea of cycling in vigorous mountain air, bikes can be rented from Cycles d'Oisans on rue Viennois not such a crazy undertaking as you might think if you keep to the valley bottoms where the gradients aren't too fearsome.Alternate spellings:: France, Le Bourg-d'Oisans, Le Bourg-d'Oisans, Le Bourg-d'Oisans
