The Parc National des Écrins (www.parcsnationaux-fr.com/ecrins) covers 230,000 acres of Alpine terrain, some 50km southeast of Grenoble and 20km west of Briançon, its highest peaks rising to around 4100m in the Massif de Pelvoux in the north of the park. The easiest route into the park is from Argentières-la-Bessée, a scruffy, depressed little place, 16km south of Briançon. From here a small road cuts west into the valley towards Vallouise, with the ice-capped monster of Mont Pelvoux itself (3946m) rearing in front of you all the way. It's terrain for serious climbers and walkers. Pages in section ‘Parc National des Écrins’: La Bâtie and Les Vigneaux, Vallouise, Ailefroide, La Bérarde.
