La Mandragore 11 rue Marx-Dormoy tel 04.76.96.18.95. The best of Grenoble's green cuisine, popular with local vegetarians and organic food fans, though it's à la carte only. Worth the long ride (tram line "A", or bus #32 to stop "St-Bruno"). Closed Sat eve, Sun, Mon & Aug.

Pointe à Pitre 2 rue Marius-Gontard tel 04.76.47.26.10. Tiny restaurant serving up specialities from the French Caribbean at very reasonable prices, with meals from €10. Daily 7pm–1am.

Le Tonneau de Diogène place Notre-Dame tel 04.16.42.38.40. A cheap standby, with uninspiring steak frites-type cuisine, but incredibly popular with tourists and a good place to meet fellow travellers. Closed Sun eve & Mon lunch.

Le Valgo 2 rue St-Hughes tel 04.76.51.38.85. A cosy, rustic-styled haven in the heart of Grenoble, serving traditional specialities of the Hautes-Alpes. Excellent value, with menus at €7.16–19.82. Closed Sun & Mon, Tues & Wed eve, and Aug.
