Mont Aiguille

The Vercors Massif, a limestone plateau featuring ridges, valleys and a variety of wildlife, is very pretty and undeveloped, but, unless you're walking, the only way to get around is to drive or hitch. CIMES leaflets detail a number of walks of varying difficulty around the area from the simplest and most accessible to St-Nizier to other good but more strenuous walks, such as Villard-de-Lans to Claix, near Grenoble (1700m descent; 7hr), and the circuit of Mont Aiguille, starting from Clelles (1hr by train south of Grenoble; 6hr 30min–9hr).
