Place de la Réunion, nominally the centre of town, is five minutes' walk north of the gare SNCF. The tourist office is on the way at 9 av Foch (July & Aug MonSat 9am7pm, Sun 10amnoon; SeptJune MonFri 9am7pm; tel 03.89.35.48.48, www.ot.ville-mulhouse.fr). As for accommodation, rooms are generally overpriced in Mulhouse, but the following hotels are comfortable and affordable: St-Bernard, 3 rue des Fleurs (tel 03.89.45.82.32, fax 03.39.45.26.32; €3040), with Internet access in the "library" in the foyer; De Paris, 5 passage de l'Hôtel-de-Ville (tel 03.89.45.21.41, fax 03.89.36.08.31; under €30); Schoenberg, 14 rue Schoenberg, behind the station (tel 03.89.44.19.41, fax 03.89.44.49.80; €3040); and Central, 1517 passage Central (tel 03.89.46.18.84, fax 03.89.56.31.66, €4055). As at Colmar and Strasbourg, Mulhouse's Alsatian restaurants are none too cheap and can be busy, but there are plenty of them. The Crêperie Crampous Mad, 14 impasse des Tondeurs (tel 03.89.45.79.43; closed Sun; menu €7.6015), is a good standby. For a really good seafood meal, try Le Bistrot à Huitres, 2 rue Moenschberg (tel 03.89.64.01.60; closed Sun & Mon; menus from €20). You can drown your sorrows at Gambrinus, 5 rue des Franciscains, north of place de la Réunion (tel 03.89.66.18.65; menu €725), which boasts over thirty beers on tap and offers simple dishes to wash them down with. At the beginning of August you can see some of the vintage cars from the Musée de l'Automobile in gear as part of a Grande Parade, and in late August, Mulhouse hosts the region's hottest jazz festival (festival dates and information: tel 03.89.45.63.95). To find out what's going on at other times of the year, get hold of a copy of Mulhouse Poche, the free Listings quarterly, or Mulhouse Echo, also free. The tourist office should be well stocked with both.
