The gare SNCF lies on the west side of the city centre, barely fifteen minutes' walk from the cathedral along rue du Maire-Kuss and rue du 22-Novembre. The airport shuttle bus (navette), departing every fifteen minutes (5.30am11pm), drops off at Baggersee, from where you can catch the very convenient and futuristic tram into central Strasbourg. The main tourist office is at 17 place de la Cathédrale (MonSat 9am7pm, Sun 9am6pm; tel 03.88.52.28.28, www.strasbourg.com), with the regional office for the Bas-Rhin département (northern Alsace) nearby at 9 rue du Dôme (MonFri 9amnoon & 1.305pm; tel 03.88.15.45.85/88, [email protected]). There's also a tourist office just in front of the train station (MonSat 9am7pm, Sun 9am6pm), in the new underground shopping complex, and one at the airport (daily 8.30am12.30pm & 1.155pm). It may be worth investing in a Strasbourg Pass (€9.90), entitling you to free entrances and discounts: one museum entrance and one half-price, a boat-tour, a full-day bike hire and the cathedral tower and clock. Much of the city centre is now pedestrian-only, but several car parks around Strasbourg cater for those who are driving into town. At Parking Rotonde, to the north, and at Parking Étoile to the south, a €2.30 fee gives you unlimited parking and tram tickets for the journey into the town centre; further south, Parking Baggersee is free and has easy access to the tram, which takes you to the town centre in fifteen minutes. Strasbourg is also France's most bicycle-friendly city, and 300km of bicycle lanes and particularly cheap bicycle rental making cycling a tempting option.
