The Hotel/Restaurant Chez Jean, 3 rue de la Gare (tel 03.88.91.10.19, www.chez-jean.com; €5570), has a restaurant with good Alsatian food (menus €1545). A less expensive option is the National, 2 Grand' Rue (tel 03.88.91.14.54; €3040), and cheaper still is the friendly HI hostel in the Château Rohan, on place de Gaulle (tel 03.88.91.14.84, fax 03.88.71.15.97; reception open 810am & 510pm; €11.35 with breakfast, €2.70 extra for sheets, cardholders only). There's also a campsite about 1km from town below the Château du Haut-Barr, on rue du Père Liebermann (tel 03.88.91.35.65; closed OctMarch). As for food, gourmets will appreciate the Taverne Katz on the main street, 80 Grand' Rue (tel 03.88.71.16.56; closed Tues eve & Wed; menu €1525): not only is it a beautiful old house with an ornately carved facade and plush decor within, but the food is excellent, traditional cuisine, with very good baeckoffe and divine sorbets. Also worth a visit is Restaurant Staeffele, 1 rue Poincaré (tel 03.88.91.63.94; closed Wed, Thurs lunch & Sun eve; menus €3550), for impeccably prepared Alsatian fare in stylish surroundings. More modest, and with a local ambience, is the Restaurant de la Marne, 5 rue du Griffon (tel 03.88.91.19.18; closed Mon), overlooking the MarneRhine canal in the centre of town, serving good copious salads amongst their varied menu. There's also a restaurant specializing in foie gras at the Château du Haut-Barr (tel 03.88.91.17.61; closed all day Mon and Thurs dinner; menus €1640).
