Wissembourg's tourist office is at 9 place de la République (MaySept MonSat 9am12.30pm & 26pm, Sun 25.30pm; OctApril MonSat 9amnoon & 25.30pm; tel 03.88.94.10.11, www.ot-wissembourg.fr). From the gare SNCF the "Office du Tourisme" signs are for cars if you're on foot the quickest route is to turn left out of the station and walk to the roundabout, where you'll see signs of café life. Turn right and you're in town. For accommodation, much the most attractive hotel is the Hôtel du Cygne, 3 rue du Sel, next to the town hall on the central place de la République (tel 03.88.94.00.16, fax 03.88.54.38.28; €4055; closed two weeks in Feb & two weeks in July; restaurant €2054). Otherwise, try the Hôtel-Restaurant au Moulin de la Walk, 2 rue de la Walk, by the hospital just outside the old town (tel 03.88.94.06.44, fax 03.88.54.38.03; €4055; closed Sun eve, Mon, Jan 830 & June 1530), which has a very good but rather pricey restaurant, with the cheapest menu at €28 easy-listening music included. Friendly and less expensive is the Hôtel de la Gare, opposite the train station (tel 03.88.94.13.67, fax 03.88.94.06.88; €3040), whose restaurant is also cheaper (closed Sun; menu at €1225). In the main street, the hotel-restaurant L'Escargot, 40 rue Nationale (tel 03.88.94.90.29, fax 03.88.94.90.29; €3040; menu at €920; closed Sun), is about the same price and its restaurant serves Alsatian cuisine. In addition to the hotel restaurants above there are a couple of reasonable places to eat on the main rue Nationale, including Au Petit Dominicain, 36 rue Nationale (tel 03.88.94.90.87; closed Mon and Tues; menu at €720), which serves traditional Alsatian food. A much fancier establishment, with a chef who serves his own inventive variations on the traditional regional cuisine, is À l'Ange, 2 rue de la République (tel 03.88.94.12.11; closed Tues eve, Wed & last two weeks in Feb), in a beautiful old house by the stream next to place du Marché-aux-Choux (the cheapest menu is the lunchtime €26, otherwise you're looking at twice that). For simple tartes flambées, Au Saumon, behind the Maison du Sel (tel 03.88.94.17.60), has a delightful garden and outdoor oven (from €5). La Mirabelle, 3 rue Générale Leclerc (tel 03.88.54.82.14) is an agreeable outdoor café for summer meals, also from €5.
