De la Boétie 4 rue de la Boétie tel 05.56.81.76.68, fax 05.56.51.24.06. Cheap and central one-star hotel on a quiet back street, owned by the Bristol and sharing its reception. Under €30.

Bristol 4 rue Boffard tel 05.56.81.85.01, [email protected]. Comfortable, relaxed two-star hotel just south of place Gambetta; its well-equipped, en-suite rooms are decently sized and stylishly decorated. €30–40

Le Chef 57 rue Huguerie tel 05.56.51.92.71, fax 05.56.79.15.16. Inexpensive hotel-restaurant with a friendly proprietor. Top-floor rooms are a long climb. €40–55

Dauphin 82 rue du Palais-Gallien tel 05.56.52.24.62, fax 05.56.01.10.91. Though a little out of the action, this arty, old-fashioned hotel is justifiably popular. The more spacious, top-price rooms, with their huge windows and high ceilings, offer best value for money. Closed last fortnight of August. €30–40

Notre-Dame 36 rue Notre-Dame tel 05.56.52.88.24, fax 05.56.79.12.67. Quiet, refined establishment offering reasonable value for money in an interesting area of old streets just north of esplanade des Quinconces. Air conditioning and generous bathrooms come as standard, though the decor is unexciting and the cheapest rooms are small for two people. €40–55

De la Presse 6–8 rue Porte-Dijeaux tel 05.56.48.53.88, [email protected]. Recently renovated family-run hotel in the pedestrian heart of Bordeaux. Its light, bright rooms are well proportioned, with big beds to match, and provide three-star comforts such as minibar and air conditioning. Closed one week at Christmas. €55–70

Des Quatre Soecurs 6 cours du 30-Juillet tel 05.57.81.19.20, [email protected]. Popular, efficient and friendly hotel in an ideal spot next to the tourist office. The rooms are cheerfully coloured, though some are a touch boxy for the price. €70–85

Regina 34 rue Charles-Domercq tel 05.56.91.66.07, fax 05.56.91.32.88. The best option near the train station, the Regina offers simple, spruce rooms of a good size. The cheapest have a shower but no toilet and, while all rooms are equipped with phones, only some have TVs. Ask for a quieter room at the back. €30–40

De la Tour Intendance 14–16 rue de la Vieille-Tour tel 05.56.81.46.27, fax 05.56.81.60.90. Despite its exterior, this pleasant hotel tucked into a quiet corner off place Gambetta boasts an elegant little lobby and comfortable, airy rooms – all en suite. You can also use their garage. €40–55

Tulip Inn Bayonne Etche-Ona 4 rue Martignac tel 05.56.48.00.88, www.bordeaux-hotel.com/uk/index.html. Two refurbished hotels, one all classy contemporary chic, the other echoing its Basque roots in plush reds and greens. All mod cons and attentive service. €70–85
