France for visitors

Châteaulin
France > Brittany > Nantes–Brest Canal > Finistère stretch > Châteaulin

CHÂTEAULIN is a quiet place, where the main reason to stay is the canal itself – or river as it is here. Most bars sell permits for its salmon and trout fishing (as do fishing shops, some of which rent out tackle). You should have little difficulty finding a room at the hotel Le Christmas, 33 Grande-Rue (tel 02.98.86.01.24; €40–55), which serves excellent food. Within a couple of minutes' walk upstream from the statue to Jean Moulin – the Resistance leader who was sous-préfet here from 1930 to 1933 – and the town centre, you'll find yourself on towpaths full of rabbits and squirrels and overhung by trees full of birds.

Alternate spellings:: France, Châteaulin, Châteaulin, Chateaulin
