At GOUAREC, the River Blavet and the canal meet in a confusing swirl of water that shoots off, edged by footpaths, in the most unlikely directions. The old schist houses of the town are barely disturbed by traffic or development, nor are there great numbers of tourists. For a comfortable overnight stop, the Hôtel du Blavet (tel 02.96.24.90.03, [email protected]; €30–40), is in an ideal waterside position. Don't be put off by its extravagant menus – they have affordable meals as well. There's also a well-positioned two-star municipal campsite, the Tost Aven (tel 02.96.24.85.42; closed Nov–Easter), next to the canal and away from the main road.
