Intra-murosSt-Malo boasts even more restaurants than hotels, with a long crescent lining the inside of the ramparts between the Porte St-Vincent and the Grande Porte. Prices are probably higher than anywhere else in Brittany, however, especially on the open café terraces – the demand is inflated by day-trippers and ferry passengers having last-night blowouts. Bear in mind that most of the crêperies also serve moules and similar quasi-snacks. All the restaurants listed below are in the citadelle.

Astrolabe 8 rue des Cordiers tel 02.99.40.36.82. Quality cuisine, not far south of the Grande Porte. A full weekday lunch costs €15; at other times, plot your way through an intricate selection of menus to get some sensational grilled langoustines and a gratin du Granny-Smith dessert for €24.50. Serves until late. Closed all day Mon & Tues lunchtime.

Borgnefesse 10 rue du Puits aux Braies tel 02.99.40.05.05. Heavily pirate-themed dining room with good solid French cooking, where you can have a two-course meal for €16.50 or a three-course one for €19.50. Closed for lunch on Sat & dinner on Sun, plus all day Mon.

Le Brick 5 rue Jacques-Cartier tel 02.99.40.18.88. Perhaps the best of the many seafood restaurants set into the walls near the Grande Porte, with a €12.50 menu that offers fish soup or "big size winkles" followed by skate, and more lavish options up to €30. Closed Mon off season.

Le Chasse Marée 4 rue Grout de St-Georges tel 02.99.40.85.10. Nautical decor and haute cuisine, round the corner from the post office, with a few tables on the quiet street and more upstairs. There's a €13.57 menu, served until 9pm, with Oysters and red mullet, and a €22.56 one featuring scallop or duck salad to start, and a mixed fish grill or fish couscous. Closed Sun in low season, plus all Feb.

Le Corps de Garde 3 montée Notre Dame tel 02.99.40.91.46. The only restaurant right up on St-Malo's ramparts is unfortunately an ordinary crêperie, serving standard €5–7 crêpes; the views from the terrace are sensational, though, looking out over the beach to the myriad little islets.

Duchesse Anne 5–7 place Guy-la-Chambre tel 02.99.40.85.33. Situated next to the Porte St-Vincent, St-Malo's best known upmarket restaurant continues to keep up its reputation – and its prices. The only set menu is a €65 lobster option; you might manage to get a lunch for under €16, but dinner will be over twice that. Whole baked fish is the main speciality. Closed Wed & Mon lunch, plus Sun evening in low season, and all Jan & Dec.

Restaurant Gilles 2 rue de la Pie-qui-Boit tel 02.99.40.97.25. Bright, modern, good-value restaurant, just off the central pedestrian axis. The basic €15 menu is fine, alternatively €21 brings you Oysters or duck pâté and a rabbit cuissot with cider. Closed Wed.
