France for visitors

Tréguier
France > Brittany > Eastern > North coast from Dinard to Lannion > Côte de Granit Rose > Tréguier

The D786 turns west from Paimpol, passing over a green ria on the bridge outside Lézardrieux before arriving at TRÉGUIER, one of the very few hill-towns in Brittany. Its central feature is the Cathédrale de St-Tugdual, which contains the tomb of St Yves, a native of the town who died in 1303 and – for his incorruptibility – became the patron saint of lawyers. Attempts to bribe him continue to this day; his tomb is surrounded by marble plaques and an inferno of candles invoking his aid.

The Hôtel-Restaurant d'Estuaire on the waterfront (tel 02.96.92.30.25; under €30) is a very basic place to stay – though the sea views are great – with reasonable menus from €12. Up in town at 2 rue Renan, La Poissonnerie du Trégor (tel 02.96.92.30.27) is an excellent fish restaurant that's no more expensive. During the market each Wednesday, clothes are spread out in the square by the cathedral, with food and fresh fish down by the port.
