On or close to the D965 and the ParisDijon train route in the open, rolling country east of Auxerre lie several minor attractions, ranging from Greek treasures to Cistercian abbeys and Renaissance châteaux. The valley of the aptly named Serein River is the location of the villages of Pontigny, of monastic origin, Chablis, famed for its excellent vineyards, and the time-locked Noyers-sur-Serein; while to the south, a string of villages along the upper valley of the Yonne provides a glimpse of a gentler, more intimate countryside. Pages in section ‘Around Auxerre’: Pontigny, Chablis, Chablis: the wine, Noyers-sur-Serein, South the valley of the Yonne.
