Some rooms are on the grotty side for the price, but their budget options in an adjacent building (with shared showers and toilets) are among the cheapest beds in town. Includes breakfast. €55–70

One of the oldest-established hotels in Ajaccio, and famous as the site of a (bloodless) armed siege in 1980, when it was occupied by fugitive nationalist guerrillas and their French secret service hostages. Following a recent re-fit, all rooms are bright and modern with air-con and TVs; balconies cost extra. €70–85

Du Golfe 5 bd du Roi-Jérôme tel 04.95.21.47.64, www.hoteldugolfe.com. Large, well-appointed three-star whose slightly pricier (soundproofed) front rooms overlook the market square and bay. Reasonable value given the location, and handy for ferry port, bus & train stations. €70–85

Kallisté 51 cours Napoléon tel 04.95.51.34.45, www.cyrnos.net. Recently revamped three-storey hotel right in the centre, with plenty of parking space. Soundproofed rooms for up to four people, all with cable TVs and bathrooms. Internet facilities in lobby, and the staff speak English. The best choice in this category. €55–70

Marengo 12 bd Mme-Mère tel 04.95.21.43.66, fax 04.95.21.51.26. A ten-minute walk west of the centre, up a quiet side-street off bd Mme-Mère. Slightly boxed in by tower blocks, but a secluded, quiet and pleasant small hotel (with only 16 rooms) away from the city bustle. Open mid-March to mid-Nov. €40–55

La Pinède rte des Sanguinaires tel 04.95.52.00.44, fax 04.95.52.09.48. Most secluded and peaceful of the swish hotels, 4km west of the town centre. It's 300m from the beach (up a narrow lane signposted right off the main road as you head out of town), but with great views of the gulf, a large pool and tennis court. €125–150

U San Carlu 8 bd Danielle-Casanova tel 04.95.21.13.84, fax 04.95.21.09.99. Sited opposite the citadelle and close to the beach, this three-star hotel is the poshest option in the old town. Well-appointed rooms, own parking facilities, and a special room for disabled guests in the basement. €85–100
