Follow the N197 for 2km, turn right at the sign for Pietra-Maggiore, and the hostel – two little houses with spacious, clean dormitories at €25 per bed, looking out over the gulf – is in the village another 2km further on (along a track that's impassable for cars). Phone ahead to make sure it's open. May–Oct. International Camping rte de L'Île Rousse tel 04.95.65.01.75. Small and fairly central site (500m from centre), popular with bikers and backpackers. The bar is lively and stays open late, with live rock bands on weekends. La Pinède 2km east of Calvi between the beach and N197 tel 04.95.65.17.00, fax 05.96.65.19.60. Popular site in a pine forest, with bar, restaurant, supermarket, tennis courts and telephones. Catch the train out here, or request the last-but-two stop before Calvi coming from L'Île Rousse direction. Closed Nov–March.
