The enormous prehistoric dwelling site, La Roque St-Christophe (daily: Jan, Feb, Nov & Dec 11am5pm; MarchJune, Sept & Oct 10am6/6.30pm; July & Aug 10am7pm; €5.50), 9km northeast of Les Eyzies along the D706 to Montignac, is made up of about one hundred caves on five levels, hollowed out of the limestone cliffs. The whole complex is 700800m long and about 80m above the ground, where the River Vézère once flowed. The earliest traces of occupation go back over 50,000 years. The view is pretty good, and the French guided tour instructive, but most of the finds are on display at the Musée National de Préhistoire in Les Eyzies.
