Monbazillac
Half a dozen kilometres south of Bergerac, looking out over the gentle slopes of its long-favoured vineyards, stands the handsome Renaissance Château de Monbazillac (Feb, March, Nov & Dec Tues–Sun 10am–noon & 2–5pm; April daily 10am–noon & 2–6pm; May & Oct daily 10am–12.30pm & 2–6pm; June & Sept daily 10am–7pm; July & Aug daily 10am–7.30pm; closed Jan; €5.65), part residence, part fortress, with its corners reinforced by four sturdy towers. Inside is an interesting museum of local traditions and crafts. There's a good restaurant attached to the Château (tel 05.53.58.38.93; closed Sun eve, Mon & Jan to mid-Feb; menus at €20 and €32), and you can buy the château's velvety, sweet white wine, best consumed with desserts or chilled as an apéritif, at the Cave de Monbazillac (closed Sun), 2km west on the D933 Marmande road.

Alternate spellings:: France, Château de Monbazillac, Château de Monbazillac, Chateau de Monbazillac
