Gignac and Aniane
France > Languedoc > Eastern > Inland > Lodève route > Gignac and Aniane

The small town of GIGNAC lies amid vineyards 30km from Montpellier, and boasts a fine eighteenth-century bridge spanning the Hérault. There's just one hotel, the modern Motel Vieux Moulin (tel 04.67.57.57.95, fax 04.67.57.69.19; €40–55) beside the river next door to Camping du Pont (tel 04.67.57.52.40). For more upmarket accommodation, head 5km north to the town of ANIANE, home to the imposing classical church of St-Sauveur and the Hostellerie St-Benoît (tel 04.67.57.71.63, fax 04.67.57.47.10; €40–55; closed late Dec to mid-Feb), which has a pool and a good restaurant (€15.25). Three kilometres further on is the eleventh-century Pont du Diable, supposedly the earliest medieval bridge in the country. The narrowest part of the Hérault gorge begins here.
