On the south bank of the river, within a twenty-kilometre radius south and east of Blois, is a cluster of impressive and easily visited châteaux. By car you could call at all of them in a couple of days, but they also make ideal cycling or walking targets if you arm yourself with a map and strike out along minor roads and woodland rides. Of the two most imposing examples, Chaumont has frequent daily trains from Blois (Onzain gare SNCF, on the other side of the river), while Chambord is relatively poorly served by the #4 bus (4–5 daily). Chambord does, however, make a flat, beautiful cycle ride from Blois. One company runs coach Tours from Blois' gare SNCF that take in both sites (mid-May to Aug 2 daily; €10 plus entry fees), and other trips leave from Tours and Amboise.
