Many of the restaurants in Chinon's medieval quarter feature overpriced "Gargantuan" menus with little connection to local cuisine, but the "Assiettes Rabelaisiennes" served at La Maison Rouge, 38 rue Voltaire, do in fact feature regional specialities; lunch menus begin at €12, and there's a half-litre pichet of ordinary Chinon red for €7.50. Otherwise, you'll find an excellent meal at Les Années 30, 78 rue Voltaire (tel 02.47.93.37.18; menus from around €23), and some truly superb dishes at Au Plaisir Gourmand, quai Charles VII (tel 02.47.93.20.48; closed Sun evening, Tues lunch & Mon), with menus from €28.
