Most people heading north from Metz whiz along the A31 motorway towards Luxembourg and Belgium to avoid numbingly dull towns like Thionville. But that means missing out on the attractions in the Bois de Coulange near Amnéville, including a spa and a collection of motorbikes; while a scenic alternative to the autoroute heads along quiet country roads that snake along the green slopes – or coteaux – of the Moselle valley, where the medieval village of Rodemack is one of the region's hidden gems. The Amnéville complex can be reached from Metz by a combination of local train, several times a day, to Hagondange, and shuttle bus (navette), more frequent at weekends. Bus services along the Moselle valley from Thionville are infrequent to say the least; your own transport is the best way to explore.
