MARVEJOLS lies at the southeast extremity of the Aubrac, on the main N9 road and the ParisBéziers train line. The country changes drastically as you approach. The bare, granite-strewn plateau opens into a wide deep basin, wooded with pines and punctuated by the erosion-formed table-topped pinnacles known hereabouts as trucs. It's a small, undeveloped and unpretentious country town, whose ancient streets are contained within surviving medieval gates, and there's little to do beyond savouring the atmosphere. The tourist office is in the main gateway on the main road (JuneSept MonSat 9amnoon & 27pm, Sun 10amnoon; OctMay MonSat 9amnoon & 26pm; tel 04.66.32.02.14, fax 04.66.32.33.50). Accommodation comes in the form of the pleasant Hôtel de la Gare et des Rochers (tel 04.66.32.10.58, [email protected]; €3040; good restaurant from €12.5030.50), opposite the gare SNCF, which is 800m uphill to the right off the N9 in the direction of Chirac. There's also a municipal campsite beside a tributary stream on the other side of the River Colagne from the town. Pages in section ‘Marvejols’: Wolves and the Béte du Gévaudan.
