Restaurants in Cherbourg divide readily into the glass-fronted seafood places along the quai de Caligny, each with its "copious" assiette de fruits de mer, and the more varied, more adventurous and less expensive little places tucked away in the pedestrianized streets and alleyways of the old town.

Café de Paris 40 quai de Caligny tel 02.33.43.12.36. Work your way through the ranks of assiettes de fruits de mer, from the €13 Matelot to the Amiral at €84 for two; there's also a quick €16 menu. Closed Sun evening, plus Mon in low season.

Café du Théâtre 8 place de Gaulle tel 02.33.43.01.49. Attractive setup adjoining the theatre, with a café behind plate-glass windows on the ground floor and a full-scale brasserie upstairs, arranged on three sides of the central opening. The varied menus, from €12.50, hold more than just seafood; the €18 one features snails, for example. Closed Sun.

Le Faitout 25 rue Tour-Carrée. Shopping-district restaurant that offers traditional French cuisine at very reasonable prices; a bowl of mussels can cost under €6, and there's a daily special for €9.50. Most dishes are à la carte, at around €9-11, but there's also an €18 menu. Closed Sun, & Mon lunchtime.

Le Grandgousier 21 rue de l'Abbaye tel 02.33.53.19.43. Formal, definitive French fish restaurant, well worth the walk to its unprepossessing location at the west end of town. Menus start at €16, but this is a place to expect to spend a lot and dine well. Closed Sat lunch and Sun evening, plus Mon lunch in low season.

La Medina 54 rue Tour-Carrée tel 02.33.93.25.01. Smart, attractive Tunisian restaurant, decked out like a snake charmer's boudoir with little mosaic tables, and serving meaty couscous dishes from €17 or vegetarian tajines for €14, plus Tunisian wine.
