France for visitors

The Cotentin
France > Normandy > Basse Normandie > Cotentin Peninsula > Around the Cotentin

Once you get away from Cherbourg, the largely rural Cotentin Peninsula is geographically an area of transition. Little ports such as Barfleur on the indented northern headland presage the rocky Breton coast, while inland the meadows resemble the farmlands of the Bocage and the Bessin. The temptation to race south towards Mont St-Michel is likely to be thwarted by slow traffic on the peninsula's wholly inadequate narrow roads, so you might as well stop off in your pick of the towns and resorts that line its western shore, like Coutances, Granville and Avranches.

Pages in section ‘Around the Cotentin’: Barfleur, St-Vaast, Utah Beach, La Hague, Château de Pirou, Coutances, Granville, St-Jean-Le-Thomas and Gênets, Avranches.
