Place d'Armes and rue Royale are the main shopping arteries in Calais-Nord, with a string of boutiques selling mainly clothes and chocolate; try La Maison du Fromage et des Vins (Closed Mon & Tues but open Sun morning) for a good selection of cheeses and wine. Generally, however, the streets of Calais-Sud particularly boulevards Jacquard and Lafayette are a better bet. Monoprix department store, on bd Jacquard, has an acceptable food and wine department. For establishments with a more individual character, try the boulangerie Fred on the same boulevard opposite the town hall which, aside from excellent bread, sells prepared dishes and salads to take away; or, for seafood, head for the Huîtrière Calaisienne, on bd Lafayette, or La Sole Berckoise, on bd Jacquard. More colourful still are the markets around place d'Armes (Wed & Sat) and bd Lafayette (Thurs & Sat). The best of the hypermarkets, or grandes surfaces, is the Auchan complex on the Boulogne road, the old N1 (MonSat 9am9pm; bus #5, giving change in sterling if you wish); this is closely followed by Carrefour/Mi-Voix, on the east side of town, on av Georges-Guynemer (daily 9am9pm; bus #4). Cité Europe, a vast new shopping complex by the Channel Tunnel terminal and just off the A16 in the direction of Boulogne (bus #7), offers you another large Carrefour (MonFri 9am10pm, Sat 8.30am10pm) as well as high-street clothes shops and food shops (MonThurs & Sat 10am8pm, Fri 10am9pm) all under one roof.
