Clubbing
France > Paris > Basics > Entertainment > Music and nightlife > Clubbing

Musically, Paris is at its most cutting-edge with hip-hop, techno and drum and bass, but most clubs play a more mainstream mix of house or techno. The clubs listed in this Guide are dedicated and usually dependable dance venues, but note that the style of music and the general vibe really depends on who's running the "soirée" on a particular night. Some showcase occasional live acts, too, especially when there's a Latin theme, and equally, many rock and world music venues hold DJ-led sessions after hours. Check out the list of gay and lesbian venues, too, many of which attract mixed crowds from the trendy end of the nightlife spectrum.

Bear in mind that some clubs operate very snooty and sometimes outright racist door policies. Most entry prices include one free drink. The barges moored to the banks of the Seine (see Batofar and La Guinguette Pirate) are your best bets for a relatively inexpensive good night out.

Given the difficulty of finding a taxi after hours, many Parisian clubbers aim to keep going until the métro starts up at around 5.30am, or even later, dancing away the morning hours at an after event. You can do the same in even grander style on Eurostar: the "Night Clubber" deal offers £35 fares from London if you leave after 4pm on a Saturday and return before 10.30pm on Sunday.
