One of the nicest places to play tennis is on one of the six asphalt courts at the Jardins du Luxembourg (daily 8am–9pm; €5.75 per hour; M° Notre-Dame-des-Champs). Officially, you need to possess a municipal sports card (Carte Paris Sports) to play, and if you want to book in advance, you need to have access to French minitel system (3615 Paris, code RTEN). In practice, it's usually OK to just turn up with your kit and wait on the spot – usually no more than an hour.

Other municipal courts are listed on the website www.paris.fr and in Parisports. Private clubs demand steep membership fees.

There are several dedicated squash centres, including Squash Montmartre, 14 rue Achille-Martinet, 18e tel 01.42.55.38.30 (Mon–Fri 10am–10.30pm, Sat & Sun 10am–8pm; M° Lamarck-Caulaincourt), which charges €14 for 45min. Alternatively, the Club Quartier Latin has squash courts for €11.50 for 45min.

The Mairie provides outdoor table-tennis tables in many of the smaller parks and outdoor spaces in Paris. It's up to you to bring a racket and balls. Some good locations include: Jardin Marco-Polo (6e), Square de la Trinité (9e), Parc Floral (12e), Parc Georges-Brassens (15e), Jardin des Batignolles (17e), and Place des Abbesses (18e).
