A colourful, funky, modern HI hostel, with a fun atmosphere and lots of facilities including a small cinema, restaurant and bar, and a local swimming pool nearby. Located on the eastern edge of the city near Charonne, which has some good bars. Huge, but very popular so try to get here early – reservations by fax or from other HI hostels only. Dorm beds cost €20.60 a night. No private rooms, but some dorms have three or four beds. M° Porte-de-Bagnolet.BVJ Paris Quartier Latin 44 rue des Bernardins, 5e tel 01.43.29.34.80, www.bvjhotel.com. Typically institutional UCRIF hostel, but spick and span and in a good location. Dorm beds (€25), plus single or double rooms (€30/27 per person). M° Maubert-Mutualité. Le Fauconnier 11 rue du Fauconnier, 4e tel 01.42.74.23.45, fax 01.40.27.81.64. MIJE hostel in a superbly renovated seventeenth-century building with a courtyard. Dorms (€24–26 per person) sleep three to eight, and there are some single (€30) and double rooms too (€40 with shower). Breakfast included. M° St-Paul/Pont-Marie. Another MIJE hostel (same prices as Le Fauconnier, above) housed in a beautiful mansion, this one has a small garden and a restaurant with menus from €9.50. Dorms and some doubles and triples. A huge, efficiently run UCRIF hostel in a fairly sedate area, with singles (€49.50), doubles (€32 per person) and dorms (€22.50–29, depending on number of beds). Facilities include meeting rooms and a disco; ideal for groups. M° Glacière. Jules Ferry 8 bd Jules-Ferry, 11e tel 01.43.57.55.60, www.fuaj.fr. Fairly central HI hostel, in a lively area at the foot of the Belleville hill. Very difficult to get a place, but when full they will help you find a bed elsewhere. Only two to four people in each room; beds cost €19. M° République. Maison des Clubs UNESCO de Paris 43 rue de la Glacière, 13e tel 01.43.36.00.63, www.clubs-unesco.asso.fr. Bland UCRIF-linked place catering mostly to groups, some on UNESCO-funded exchange programmes. Beds cost €20 per person in a triple room, €23 in a double, and €28 in a single, though there are few of these. Bathroom facilities are shared between rooms. Open 24hr. M° Glacière. Maubuisson 12 rue des Barres, 4e tel 01.42.74.23.45. An MIJE hostel in a magnificent medieval building on a quiet street. Shared use of the restaurant at Le Fourcy (see above). Dorms only, sleeping four (€25 per person). Breakfast included. M° Pont-Marie/Hôtel-de-Ville. Maurice Ravel 6 av Maurice-Ravel, 12e tel 01.44.75.60.00, www.cisp.asso.fr. This hostel, run by CISP (Centre International de Séjour de Paris), is some distance from central Paris, but close to the lovely Bois de Vincennes, and there's a swimming pool. Rooms come in a wide variety of sizes, from eight-bed dorms (€15.40 per person) to twins (€25) and singles (€30), but all share shower rooms. CISP have another hostel set in a park near the Porte-d'Italie, at the southern end of the 13e. M° Porte-de-Vincennes/Porte-Dorée.
