Charming, quiet hotel in a splendid period building hidden away at the end of an elegant 1850s passage. Rooms are pleasantly furnished, though the cheaper ones are on the small side and a little dark. M° Grands-Boulevards. €70–85

Hôtel de Noailles 9 rue Michodière, 2^e tel 01.47.42.92.90, fax 01.49.24.92.71. Although part of an international chain, the Noailles hasn't lost its own identity and offers contemporary styling with traditional pleasures of garden and terrasse. M° Opéra/4-Septembre. €125–150

Hôtel Vivienne 40 rue Vivienne, 2^e tel 01.42.33.13.26, fax 01.40.41.98.19, [email protected]. Ideally located for the Opéra Garnier and the Grands Boulevards, this is a friendly hotel, with good-sized, cheery rooms, some with Internet points. M° Grands-Boulevards. €55–70

Les Halles and Châtelet

Agora 7 rue de la Cossonnerie, 1^er tel 01.42.33.46.02, fax 01.42.33.80.99. Expensive for a two-star, but it's in a good location – on a pedestrianized street right in the heart of Les Halles. Individually styled, old-fashioned rooms, all with bathroom. M° Châtelet-Les-Halles. €85–100

Hôtel du Palais 2 Quai de la Mégisserie, 1^er tel 01.42.36.98.25, fax 01.42.21.41.67. The rooms at the top are basic and cheap; alternatively pay €10 more for a view over the Seine and a shower in your room. Location and views at this price are hard to beat. M° Châtelet. €40–55

Relais du Louvre 19 rue des Prêtres St-Germain l'Auxerrois, 1^er tel 01.40.41.96.42, fax 01.40.41.96.44, [email protected]. Small, discreet hotel done out in Second Empire style. Its relaxed atmosphere and charming service attract a faithful clientele. M° Palais-Royal-Musée-du-Louvre. €100–125

Hôtel St-Honoré 85 rue St-Honoré, 1^er tel 01.42.36.20.38, fax 01.42.21.44.08, [email protected]. Conveniently close to the heart of things, this is a stylishly renovated old building with 29 rooms, all en-suite. M° Châtelet/Les Halles/Louvre. €70–85

Tiquetonne 6 rue Tiquetonne, 2^e tel 01.42.36.94.58. On a pedestrianized street, close to the red-light stretch of St-Denis, this old-fashioned budget hotel dates back to the 1920s and looks as though it's changed little since. Its 47 rooms are well-maintained and clean though. M° Étienne-Marcel. €40–55

Vauvilliers 6 rue Vauvilliers, 1^er tel 01.42.36.89.08. Well-established, popular budget option in a quiet street. Rooms are spartan though acceptable at this price. M° Châtelet-Les Halles/Louvre. Under €30.
