Montmartre and northern Paris France > Paris > MontmartreMontmartre lies in the middle of the largely petit-bourgeois and working-class 18e arrondissement, respectable round the slopes of the hill (or Butte Montmartre), distinctly less so around Pigalle on the northern edge of the 9e arrondissement and towards the Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est into the 10e arrondissement, where the colourful bazaar-like shops and depressing slums of the Goutte d'Or crowd along the rail lines. On its northern edge, across the so-called "plain of Montmartre", lies the extensive St-Ouen flea market. To the west, between avenue de Clichy and the St-Lazare train lines, is the little-explored Batignolles quartier. Pages in section ‘Montmartre’: Montmartre, Pigalle, South of Pigalle, Goutte d'Or and the northern stations, Batignolles to Clichy, St-Ouen market.
