Coffee and tea
France > Paris > Eating and drinking > Alcoholic and soft drinks > Coffee and tea

Coffee is invariably made with an espresso machine and is very strong. Un café or unexpress is black; une noisette has a touch of milk; un crème is milky; and un grand café or un grand crème is a large cup of milky coffee. In the morning you could also ask for un café au lait – espresso in a large cup or bowl filled up with hot milk. Un déca, decaffeinated coffee, is very widely available. Hot chocolate (chocolat chaud) can also be had in any café.

Drinkers of tea (thé), nine times out of ten, have to settle for Lipton's teabags. Tea is served black, and you can usually have a slice of lemon (citron) with it if you want; for some milk with it, ask for un peu de lait frais (some fresh milk). Tisanes or infusions are the generic terms for herb teas – every café serves them. The more common ones are verveine (verbena), tilleul (lime blossom), menthe (mint) and camomille.
