For those occasions when you don't want or can't face a full meal, Paris offers numerous street stalls and stand-up sandwich bars. In addition to the indigenous frites (French fries), crêpes, galettes (wholewheat pancakes), gaufres (waffles) and fresh sandwiches, there are Tunisian snacks like brik à l'œuf (a fried pastry with an egg inside), merguez (spicy North African sausage), couscous, Greek souvlaki (kebabs), Middle Eastern falafel (deep-fried chickpea balls with salad), Japanese sushi, and all manner of good things from eastern European and Asian delis. For picnics and takeaway food, head for either a charcuterie proper or the delicatessen counter in a good supermarket. Although specializing in pork-based preparations like salami and ham, most charcuteries also stock a wide range of cold cuts, pâtés, terrines, ready-made salads and fully prepared main courses. These are not exclusively meaty, either: artichokes à la grecque, stuffed tomatoes and paellas are common. You buy by weight, by the slice (tranche) or by the carton (barquette).
