Le Baron Rouge 1 rue Théophile-Roussel, 12e. A good selection of dependable lower-range French wines; €2 for a small tasting glass. Very drinkable Merlot at €2.50 a litre, if you bring your own containers. M° Ledru-Rollin. Tues–Fri 10am–2pm & 5–9.30pm, Sat 10am–9.30pm, Sun 10.30am–1pm.

Caves Michel Renaud 12 pl de la Nation, 12e. Established in 1890 and purveying superb-value French and Spanish wines, champagnes and Armagnac. M° Nation. Daily 9.30am–1pm & 2–8.30pm; closed Sun pm and Mon am.

Les Caves St-Antoine 95 rue St-Antoine, 4e. A small, amicable outfit. M° St-Paul. Tues–Fri 9am–1pm & 3–8pm, Sat 9am–8pm, Sun 9am–1pm.

Nicolas 31 pl de la Madeleine, 8e. A reliable merchant, with dozens of shops across the city. A good general selection. M° Madeleine. Mon–Sat 9am–8pm.

Le Repaire de Bacchus 112 rue Mouffetard, 5e. A good chain to look out for, with branches in every arrondissement. Sells many lesser-known and cheaper wines. M° Censier-Daubenton.
