Secondhand and rétro
France > Paris > Shopping > Clothes > Secondhand and rétro

Rétro means "period clothes", mostly unsold factory stock from the 1950s and 1960s, though some shops specialize in expensive high-fashion articles from as far back as the 1920s. Plain secondhand stuff is referred to as fripe – not especially interesting compared with London or New York, and dominated by the US combat-jacket style. The best place to look is probably the Porte de Montreuil flea market.

Ding Dong Bazaar 24 rue Mouffetard, 5e. Tiny store stocking attractive oddments of clothes and paste jewellery dating from the prewar years. M° Place Monge. Noon–2pm & 4–8pm, closed Tues.

L'Occaserie 30 rue de la Pompe, 16ewww.occaserie.com. Specialists in secondhand haute couture – Dior, Prada, Cartier and the like. "Secondhand" doesn't mean cheap though: Chanel suits are around €720, Louis Vuitton handbags €300. M° Muette/Passy. Mon–Sat 11am–7pm. Several smaller boutiques nearby: 16 & 21 rue de l'Annonciation, 14 rue Jean Bologne and 19 rue de la Pompe.

Réciproque 89, 92, 93–97, 101 & 123 rue de la Pompe, 16e. A similar series of shops to L'Occaserie's. Women's design at no. 93–95; accessories and coats for men at no. 101; more accessories and coats for women at no. 123. M° Pompe. Tues–Sat 11am–7.30pm.
