De l'Angleterre 29 bd Raspail tel 04.90.86.34.31, www.hoteldangleterre.fr. Located in the southwest corner of the old city, this is an old and traditional hotel with some very reasonably priced rooms, well away from night-time noise. €55–70

Arts 7 & 9 rue d'Aigarden tel 04.90.86.63.87, fax 04.90.82.90.15. Cosy little hotel in an eighteenth-century building. Handy for the train and bus stations. €30–40

Cloître St Louis 20 rue de Portail-Boquier tel 04.90.27.55.55, www.cloitre-saint-louis.com. A large but personable and good-value hotel with all the facilities, including TV, phone and en-suite baths. €125–150

La Ferme chemin du Bois, Île de la Barthelasse tel 04.90.82.57.53, www.hotel-laferme.com. A sixteenth-century farm on the island in the Rhône (signposted right off Pont Daladier as you cross over from Avignon), with well-equipped and pleasant rooms and greenery all around. Closed Nov to mid-March. €55–70

Garlande 20 rue Galante tel 04.90.85.08.85, fax 04.90.27.16.58. Delightful place right in the centre of the city on a narrow street. Well known, so book in advance. €55–70

Innova 100 rue Joseph-Vernet tel 04.90.82.54.10, [email protected]. A small, friendly hotel in the centre of town that's well worth booking in advance. €30–40

Le Magnan 63 rue Portail-Magnanen tel 04.90.86.36.51, www.avignon-et-provence.com/le-magnan. Quiet hotel just inside the walls by Porte Magnanen a short way east from the station, and with a very pleasant shaded garden. €55–70

Mons 5 rue de Mons tel 04.90.82.57.16, www.hoteldemons.com. A central, imaginatively converted thirteenth-century chapel. All the rooms are odd shapes, and you breakfast beneath a vaulted ceiling. €55–70
