Christian Étienne 10 rue de Mons tel 04.90.86.16.50. One of Avignon's best restaurants, housed in a fourteenth-century mansion and offering exotic combinations such as fennel sorbet with a saffron sauce plus some great seafood dishes. Menus from €30–85. Closed Sun & Mon.

Couscousserie de l'Horloge 2 rue de Mons tel 04.90.85.84.86. Popular Algerian-run restaurant with a jovial atmosphere and excellent North African food. Try the delicious tajine aux prunes at €12.

D'ici et d'ailleurs 4 rue Galante tel 04.90.14.63.65. Provençal dishes from "here", international flavours from "there" and live music weekend nights. Tasty, and not expensive. Lunch for €11, dinner from €14. Closed Sun.

L'Entrée des Artistes 1 place des Carmes tel 04.90.82.46.90. Small, friendly bistro serving traditional French dishes; €16 weekday menu. Closed lunch Sat, Sun & first two weeks of Sept.

La Ferme chemin du Bois, Île de la Barthelasse tel 04.90.82.57.53. A traditional farmhouse, serving well-prepared simple dishes, from €20. Closed Mon & Wed except July & Aug.

Rose au Petit Bedon 70 rue Joseph-Vernet tel 04.90.82.33.98. The "Potbelly" does the best meal for under €26 to be had anywhere in the city.

Woolloomooloo 16 bis rue des Teinturiers tel 04.90.85.28.44. An old printshop with all the presses still in place. The cuisine is from just about everywhere, as are the teas. Menus at €11 (lunch) or €17. Occasional theme nights. Closed Mon.
