South of Carcassonne, the road and the rail line both climb steadily up the twisting valley of the River Aude, between scrubby hills and vineyards and ever deeper and more forested ravines to Quillan. From there, the road squeezes through the Gorges de l'Aude in a sunless bottom before emerging once again towards the river's headwaters above Les Angles on the east side of the Carlit Massif in the high Pyrenees. It's a magnificent drive, and quite hitchable, being one of the main routes to Andorra, though buses do make the run through to Quérigut three times a week.
