If you don't have your own transport, the simplest forays into the soft, seductive landscapes of the Basque hinterland are along the St-Jean-de-Luz–Sare bus route or the Bayonne–St-Jean-Pied-de-Port train line. Both give a representative sample of the area's main characteristics.
