France for visitors

North of the Écrins
France > Alps > Briancon > North of the Écrins

Connecting Grenoble to Briançon, the N91 twists through the precipitous valley of the Romanche and over the Col du Lautaret (2058m), which is kept open all year round and served regularly by the Grenoble–Briançon bus. As well as being an exciting foretaste of the high mountain scenery to come, this route offers the opportunity for some worthwhile detours, including the climb across the Col du Galibier to Valloire and hikes along the Valley of Guisane. Although it's not the biggest village along the route, Le Bourg-d'Oisans is an attractive town which is the traditional capital of the region. Sprawling Les Deux-Alpes is bigger, but has been wholly subsumed in the ski industry.

Pages in section ‘North of the Écrins’: Le Bourg-d'Oisans, L'Alpe d'Huez, La Grave and the Col du Lautaret, Galibier and Valloire, Le Casset.
