CARHAIX, a further 25km east of Châteaulin, is a road junction that dates back to the Romans. It has cafés and shops to replenish supplies, but other than in mid-July, when it hosts the massive three-day rock festival des Vieilles Charrues, there's little reason to visit. The most interesting building in town is the granite Renaissance Maison de Sénéchal on rue Brisieux, which houses the tourist office (July & Aug Mon–Sat 9am–12.30pm & 1.30–7pm, Sun 10am–1pm; Sept–June Mon–Sat 10am–noon & 2–6pm; tel 02.98.93.04.42). The modern Hôtel Gradlon at 12 bd de la République (tel 02.98.93.15.22; €40–55), near the church, makes a comfortable place to spend the night, and serves good food, with dinner menus starting at €13.
