The islands of Houat and Hoëdic can also be reached by ferry from Quiberon-Port-Maria with the Societé Morbihannaise et Nantaise de Navigation (16 sailings daily depending on the season; tel 08.20.05.60.00, or, from outside France, tel 02.97.35.02.00, www.smn-navigation.fr; €20.60 return, bicycles €10.50). The crossing to Houat takes forty minutes, to Hoëdic another 25. Alternatively, Vedettes Ar'moor sail to both islands from Le Croisic and nearby La Turballe, daily in summer (July & Aug only, departs Le Croisic 7.45am, La Turballe 8.15am; tel 02.97.62.94.43; €21 return). Finally, Navix (tel 02.97.46.60.00, www.navix.fr; €24 return) run day-trips to Houat only on most days in July and August, leaving Vannes at 7.30am, La Trinité at 8am, and Port-Navalo at 8.45am.You can't take your car to these two very much smaller versions of Belle-Île and both have a feeling of being left behind by the passing centuries, although the younger fishermen of Houat have revived the island's fortunes by establishing a successful fishing co-operative. Houat in particular has excellent beaches as ever on its sheltered (eastern) side that fill up with campers in the summer even though camping is not strictly legal. Hoëdic on the other hand has a large municipal campsite, overlooking the port (tel 02.97.30.63.32; closed SeptJune). There are a couple of small hotels on Houat L'Ezenn (tel 02.97.30.69.73; €3040) and the pricier Hôtel-Restaurant des Îles (tel 02.97.30.68.02; €4055; closed Dec & Jan) and one on Hoëdic, Les Cardinaux (tel 02.97.52.37.27, [email protected]; €4055; closed Sun pm & Mon in winter).
